Eve is part of the furniture at our little part of paradise. A member since ages ago, and soon to be the recipient of her 500 class tee, Eve took the not too little step to being a coach last year and hasn't looked back since. A graduate of not only our Advanced Training and Theory Course, Eve has also ticked off CrossFit's Level 1 and The Brand X Method's Teen coaching courses.
We caught up with Eve to hear her coaches story.
Where does your passion for fitness and a healthy lifestyle come from?
This is quite hard to answer, well for me it is.
I was extremely fit, healthy and very passionate about fitness when I was younger. I did a lot of sports like gymnastics, running, roller skating, touch, but then we moved away from Wanganui and moved around a lot that I lost all my passion for fitness. Years past, then I had my son which got me a little motivated to get back to a healthy lifestyle.
My partner joined CrossFit Hutt Valley and I saw something that lit that passion for fitness again. I ended up winning a free 2 week trial (which showed, as I was a very heavy smoker too back then).
I was hooked after my first WOD. I found that passion again for fitness and a healthy lifestyle and now I have been smoke free nearly 3 years, and my drive and passion for fitness gets stronger and stronger every day....
Why do you coach, what motivates you to teach?
I like to think that I am a natural born leader, as ever since I was little I was always the kid that my parents, teachers and coaches always picked to be a leader, demonstrate new movements etc. This seemed to be because they believed I always had a positive mindset and was always encouraging and motivating the people around me.
A number of reasons motivate me to coach, but I think the main reason is when I get to see people achieve their goals. The smile on their faces makes it all worth it.
I always tell the members this: Believe in yourself, because I do and always will.
What do you think separates a great coach from a good coach?
Good coaches can see faults and have the tools, knowledge and ability to correct these faults. If you can get your athletes to move better consistently, you’re a "Good Coach "
I believe Great coaches have the ability to go beyond the movements and connect with their athletes. I call this the "Deeper side of coaching " which is developing an awareness of your athlete’s potential, building trust and creating an atmosphere of success.
The deeper side of coaching is about establishing and nurturing a strong relationship between and athlete and their coach.
I truly believe this relationship is the foundation of our true goals as coaches:
To improve the lives, health and happiness of our members.
What is the most rewarding part of coaching?
To me, the most rewarding part of being a coach is watching members smash their goals. I have had some real proud Coach moments, seeing one member managing to hit both her 1st toes to bar, and being able to squat below parallel was great, but the true reward was the smile on her face. That was priceless.
Another member had been stuck on the same One Rep Max for their Back Squat for about 1 year but a couple of months ago she smashed out a new PR by 5kg's.
I have lots of rewarding times, but most of all knowing that I can help to be a part of a member changing their lives is so worth it.
What is something most people don’t know about you or something interesting?
What people don't know about me is:
I lived in a house truck for over 6 years, taking correspondence, rather than traditional schooling. The first 2 years we moved every 3-6 months, as my dad built cowsheds around the North Island. After that we joined up with Mahons Amusements, showing up and down the country side enjoying the lifestyle of a carny...
